The layering method, step by step
Build the bed in this order, from the bottom up. Each layer does a job.
Start with a crisp white base.

Layer a quilt over the top.
A quilt adds texture and a little weight so the bed doesn’t look flat. In a coastal room I lean toward soft whites, sandy neutrals, or a gentle blue. Fold a blanket (or second quilt) at the foot.

A few pro tips I’ve learned the hard way
- Buy in white and buy in multiples. White bedding you can wash hot and swap fast is worth its weight in gold on turnover day. Keep at least two full sets per bed.
- Iron or steam the top edge. You don’t have to iron everything, but a smooth top fold reads expensive in photos and in person.
- Fewer pillows, done well. A wall of throw pillows just ends up on the floor. Guests love it less than Pinterest does. Keep it tidy.
- Match your palette to your setting. Whites, sandy neutrals, and soft blues photograph like a dream in a beach house and never go out of style.
