After ten years of hosting beach rentals, here’s the thing I wish someone had told me at the start: you do not need a designer’s budget to make a place feel like a getaway. Guests aren’t counting your receipts — they’re noticing whether a space feels calm, clean, and cared for. So I’m walking you room by room through 25 of my go-to moves — budget finds I actually use, plus a few free styling tricks that make everything look more expensive.
In the Living Room
-
- Start with a coffee table that anchors the room — It’s where guests drop a book, a drink, and their feet — so I want it pretty and practical.
-
- Add a coastal accent chair (or two) — Nothing says “vacation” like a comfy chair by the window.
-
- Flank the sofa with end tables — A pair instantly makes a living room feel finished — and gives guests somewhere to set a drink: → End tables.
-
- Hide the clutter with a TV sideboard — Cords, remotes, the guest binder… a media cabinet hides it all and doubles as a styling surface: → TV sideboard.
-
- Ground the room with a budget rug — A rug pulls the whole space together — the 6×9 runs about $110 and the 8×10 about $150: → Budget rug.
-
- Layer in natural texture with a great basket — Coastal doesn’t mean seashells everywhere. A woven basket for throws (or firewood, or toys) reads high-end and hides a multitude of clutter. This one’s a workhorse:→ Natural texture / basket.
-
- Toss on a few decorative pillows — The cheapest way to make a sofa or bed look designed. A couple of coastal throw pillows add color and that lived-in, cozy feel guests love: → Decorative pillows.
-
- Shop your own home first — Before you buy a thing, walk your own house. That lamp, that framed print in the spare room — move it around before you spend a dime. Half my best “finds” were already in my garage.

In the Bedroom
-
- Upgrade to a coastal headboard — The fastest way to make a bedroom look intentional instead of thrown together — and this one’s under $120: → Coastal headboard.
-
- Invest in hotel-white bedding — White bedding is the boutique-hotel secret: it photographs beautifully and bleaches fresh between guests: → Hotel-white bedding.
-
- Layer a budget quilt on top — Folded at the foot of the bed, it adds that styled, layered look — and it’s under $26:→ Budget quilt.
-
- Make the bed like a boutique hotel — How you make the bed matters as much as what’s on it. I broke the whole process down here [INTERNAL LINK → Bed styling post] — it’s the trick that earns those “felt just like a hotel” reviews.
In the Bathroom
-
- Swap in a statement shower curtain — The fastest bathroom refresh there is — it sets the whole color scheme for less than dinner out: → Statement shower curtain.
-
- Stock fluffy white bath towels — Fresh white towels, folded or rolled the hotel way, make a bathroom feel brand new — and guests notice. These are the ones I use, and here’s how I style them:→ White bath towels\
In the Kitchen
-
- Put out mugs guests actually want to use — Nice mugs are a tiny detail that makes the morning-coffee moment feel special. A matching set beats a cabinet of mismatched freebies: → Mugs.
-
- Choose cookware that looks good out on the stove — A cream cookware set does double duty — it works and it looks pulled-together on open shelving or the range: → Cream cookware.
-
- Add a pretty small appliance — A cream toaster oven is the rare appliance you don’t want to hide. It reads high-end on the counter and guests love having one: → Cream toaster oven.
In the Dining Area
-
- Refresh your dining seating — Wobbly, mismatched chairs are a quiet review-killer. Grab a set of six for a table you already have:→ Dining chairs / dining set or start fresh with a full set:→ Dining Table set.
Lighting & Finishing Touches
-
- Hang a rattan pendant light — Lighting is where a rental feels like a home instead of a rental. This rattan pendant brings instant coastal warmth for about $114:→ Rattan pendant light.
-
- Edit and declutter before guests arrive — The most underrated “decor” move is taking things away. Empty surfaces feel calm and expensive. When in doubt, remove one more thing.
-
- PAINT! Easy and not expensive. My favorite paint colors are Benjamin Moore Moonshine and and White Dove and Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.
-
- Then take great photos of it all — Once it’s styled, shoot it in daylight with the lamps on. Your listing photos are doing the selling long before anyone walks through the door.

You don’t have to do all 25 at once. Pick a room, start with one or two changes…
